Actor Lukman Avaran, known for his nuanced performances in films like Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka, is winning praise yet again — this time for his role as Antony Joshua in the Khalid Rahman-directed sports drama Alappuzha Gymkhana. In an interview with OTTplay, Lukman spoke about what drew him to the role, his journey in Malayalam cinema, and his evolving choices as an actor.
Lukman says he didn’t hesitate to take up the role in Alappuzha Gymkhana, especially since it was Rahman’s directorial follow-up to Thallumaala. “Physically demanding roles like this are rare. Preparing for boxing, training hard for three months — all of that was new and rewarding,” he shared, adding that the positive reception to the film validated his hard work.
Reflecting on his early days, Lukman says working alongside veterans like Mammootty, Kunchacko Boban, and Soubin Shahir shaped him. “Being part of their projects helped me grow both as an artist and a person,” he said.
He feels that some of his lesser-known works like Corona Dhavan, Anchakkallakokkan, and Perumani deserved wider acclaim. “Each film had a unique tone and story. Some don’t click the way we hope, but I’ve been lucky to work with passionate teams,” he added.
Lukman says his collaborations with unconventional directors have been both accidental and lucky. “Each director brings a new rhythm to the set. I’ve even been called back by filmmakers, which tells me I’m doing something right,” he smiled.
Lukman will next be seen in a film by Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham director Muhashin, as well as Athibheekara Kaamukan and the upcoming Asif Ali-starrer Tiki Taka, directed by Rohith. “Only a portion of my scenes for Tiki Taka are done — the rest is coming up soon,” he shared.
