The UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which has become the most reliable medium of digital payments in India, is now going to be more agile and effective than before. This new facility will make life easier for Indians who have done crores of transactions every day. Now users will not have to wait long for the reversal of transaction status or fail payment.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently taken a major decision and directed all the concerned banks and payment apps to ensure necessary changes in their system by 16 June 2025. The main objective of these changes is to make UPI experiences more fast, comfortable and reliable.

Now not 30, you will get response in just 10 seconds

According to NPCI circular, response time has been reduced considerably for many important APIs of UPI. Now:-

  • For services like Transaction Status Check and Transaction Reversal, the maximum response time has been reduced from 30 seconds to 10 seconds.

  • At the same time, this time has been reduced from 15 seconds to 10 seconds for Validate Address (Pay, Collect) API.

  • These changes will directly help UPI users to give immediate information about fast service and failure transactions.

Apps will also have to update

This change will affect all the Ramitter Banks, Beneficiary Banks and Payment Service Providers (PSPS) like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm etc. Everyone has to upgrade their system according to the new time-limit, so that the user gets a smooth experience and there is no technical delay.

Customers will get great experience

NPCI said in the circular:- The purpose of the above amendments is to improve customer experience. Members must ensure that they make necessary changes in their system so that the reactions can be handled within the modified time. If the members have any dependence/configuration change at the end of the partner/merchant, then it should also be taken care of. This simply means that all members have to ensure that the change in their system is applied in time, whether it is a bank or a merchant partner.

Why is this update important?

  • Refund will be available soon when transaction fails

  • Real time payments will be reduced

  • Digital payment user trust will increase

  • Accountability of banks and apps will increase
