In 2024, the British Pie Awards gave the title of Supreme Champion to Middleton-in-Teesdale Fish and Chip Shop near Barnard Castle, County Durham. It beat 35 other sellers to be crowned the "pie of pies" and was described by judges as "well balanced" and "perfectly seasoned and wonderfully flakey". The pie shop is clearly a hit with locals and has an impressive 4.6 out of 5 stars on Google, with reviewers calling it "superb" and "delightful".
Middleton-in-Teesdale is a tiny town with jut over 1,000 residents. Meanwhile, Barnard Castle is a small town home to around 5,400 people. The historic market town is located on the north bank of the River Tees and is named after the old castle that it grew around.
