In today's digital age, we often use words like website and web portal, but have you ever wondered what is the difference between these two? Most people consider both of them to be the same, but from a technical point of view, these are two completely different platforms. Their objectives, features, and methods of user interaction are different.

What is a website?

A website is a permanent digital address on the Internet, where there are one or more web pages. Anyone can access it through a common URL (eg www.google.com). Its purpose is to provide information, promote brands, and show content.

For example, news sites (amarujala.com or news.google.com), blogs or government websites, etc. There is no need to log in to access the website and all users see the same content in it. Its interaction is limited such as reading, clicking on a link, or filling out a form.

Now know about web portal.

A web portal is a special type of website, which is made user-centric. Login is required to access this platform, and every user is shown their personal information or services.

Its purpose is to provide custom information, services, or tools to the user. For example, student portal (result, timetable), net banking portal, employee portal (pay-slip, leave), etc.

Portals cannot be accessed without a login. Every user gets different information on the same portal. In the portal, the user can upload, download data, interact and use custom tools.

How to identify the difference between a website and a portal?

If you are only reading information on a site and login is not required, then it is a website. On the other hand, if you are filling your personal details or availing services by logging in, then it is a web portal.
