New Delhi: Sony has officially stated that the PlayStation 6 is one of the major focuses of the company when it comes to the future of its gaming platform. As the PlayStation 5 reaches the five-year anniversary, the question that many fans have been asking themselves is what would be next. The management at Sony has now put it beyond doubt that the company continues to look into developing new console hardware as a top priority.
Although the popularity of cloud gaming is gradually increasing, Sony does not think that it has a serious advantage over traditional consoles. Recently, in an investor call, the company reported that consoles are more stable on the network and less expensive in the long term than cloud streaming.
VGC reported, Hideaki Nishino, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, explained that cloud technology was gaining traction but it does not deliver a stable network performance. He added that the cost of streaming is also more expensive by the hour than console gaming. Although cloud is improving, Sony feels that the majority of gamers would prefer to play on local hardware instead of using the internet.
Nishino also pointed out that Sony has established a solid base of players in PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This has made the company have a lot of interest in its plans for the next generation. He affirmed that even though he was not at liberty to provide certain details, the PS6 is at the heart of the Sony future plan.
Lynn Azar, a Senior VP of Finance of SIE, also stated that Sony is currently trying to determine what the future of the PlayStation platform is. She stated that conventional console upgrade cycles are no longer as such and now Sony is interested in expanding a multi-generational ecosystem. The company will also provide novel methods through which players will access their content and enjoy it through the generations.
