Two days after the bridge collapse in Pune, Maharashtra's Chief Secretary Sujata Manoj Saunik issued an advisory recommending the closure of high-risk tourist spots during the monsoon season. This decision aims to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of both tourists and residents, as heavy rains are expected to impact the region.
In light of the collapse, which has raised concerns about infrastructure safety, the Chief Secretary talked about safeguarding individuals visiting vulnerable areas. The directive specifically targets locations prone to landslides and flooding, which pose significant risks during adverse weather conditions.
The advisory comes as Maharashtra prepares for the impending monsoon, with meteorological forecasts indicating heavy rainfall across the state. Officials are urging local authorities to monitor conditions closely and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential hazards. The Chief Secretary stated, "We must prioritise the safety of our citizens and visitors. Closing high-risk areas will help prevent tragedies during this critical period."

Impact of the Collapse

Following the incident, various stakeholders, including engineers and safety inspectors, are evaluating existing structures to identify potential weaknesses. This proactive approach aims to avert future accidents and enhance the resilience of the region's infrastructure.
Local officials are working collaboratively with the government to implement the advisory effectively. This includes informing tourists about the risks associated with certain locations and providing alternative safe options for recreational activities. The advisory also emphasises the necessity for continuous communication with the public regarding safety protocols during the monsoon.
