In 2007 Ranbir Kapoor son of legendary actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor and grandson of Raj Kapoor made his Bollywood debut with Saawariya. He was paired opposite the evergreen Anil Kapoors daughter Sonam Kapoor. While the film saw an ensemble cast it still failed to impress masses and critics turning out to be a significant box office disaster.
Based on Fyodor Dostoevskys 1848 short story White Nights the movie revolves around the love story of Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) and Sakina (Sonam Kapoor). Raj a wandering musician fells in love with Sakina a beautiful Muslim girl. However when he tries to confess his feelings Sakina rejects his proposal and tells him that she loves Imaan (Salman Khan) who has promised to return.
Besides Ranbir Sonam and Salman the movie also features Rani Mukerji as Gulabi. Saawariya also marked the last appearance of both Zohra Sehgal and Begum Para before their demises.
Made in a budget of Rs 45 crore the film earned a modest Rs 39.22 crore. At the time Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Saawariya faced a box office clash with Farah Khan’s directorial Om Shanti Om starring Shah Rukh Khan and debuting Deepika Padukone. Both the films released around Diwali and within two days itself it was clear that Saawariya had failed quite miserably. Hence Om Shanti Om outperformed SLBs romantic drama earning Rs 152 crore worldwide.
Years later when Ranbir Kapoor was asked about the failure of his debut film Saawariya the actor said to Nikhil Kamath In hindsight I’m glad it didn’t do well because that really prepared me for the life ahead.
