Ahead of Real Madrid's opening Club World Cup fixture against Al-Hilal, Alonso provided more clarification on Rodrygo and suggested that he will stay at the La Liga club after holding talks with the £84m-rated player.

Alonso said: "I know what had happened. The end of the season wasn't easy for him. He took some time to reset. We've talked since day one, and I see him eager to contribute on the field and enjoy himself."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that his father and representative Eric Goes is not willing to enter negotiations with Arsenal or any other club, at this stage, with his son said to be 'charmed' under Alonso.

Although Rodrygo is keen to remain at Real alongside Alonso, Arsenal centre-back Gabriel would love for him to become a teammate at club level.
