Citing Sinchew, Znews reported that Shi—who once rose to fame through popular TV dramas and web series—shared the news on social media, explaining that his strong physique and stamina made the physically demanding job a practical choice. He stressed that the move was not a publicity stunt but a serious effort to earn a living.

According to Shi, his responsibilities as a guide now include carrying luggage, distributing water and fruit, giving foot massages, and lifting spirits with humor during hikes.

He also shed light on the wider crisis facing performers in China, stating that roughly 300,000 actors in Beijing alone are currently out of work. With few roles and fewer auditions, many have had to find alternative sources of income to stay afloat. Still, he remains optimistic.

“When I’m not acting, I take on other jobs to support myself and gain life experience,” Shi said. “Maybe one day, when I return to acting, I’ll be able to bring greater depth and authenticity to my performances.”

Shi’s account quickly went viral on Weibo, drawing sympathy and concern from netizens over the growing employment struggles within China’s entertainment scene.

Now 30, Shi graduated from the Central Academy of Drama and received a scholarship in his first year. His acting credits include “Campus Basketball Situation,” “No Secrets,” “Youth,” “Our Parallel Universes,” and “Take Me Home.”
