A new Marvel movie scheduled for release in 2028 has sparked speculation about which superhero team or character will lead in the film. Fans are now debating whether this marks the long-awaited debut of the X-Men. If true, the film could signal a major shift in Marvel’s post-Secret Wars direction and bring mutants into the cinematic universe.
Disney has officially added a fourth untitled Marvel Studios film to its 2028 release slate, scheduled for December 15, 2028. This follows previously announced Marvel titles dated for February, May, and November 2028.
If Marvel releases all four films that year, it would mark a departure from recent output reductions. In May 2025, Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the studio had “lost a little focus by making too much,” prompting Marvel to scale back its production to focus on quality.
Iger stated during an investor call, “We’ve also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much” (via Forbes). He added that refocusing on fewer, higher-quality films is now a priority for the studio.
However, whether the December 2028 release will be utilized remains uncertain. Disney has a history of holding onto dates without confirming titles. For example, Marvel’s Blade was removed from its November 2025 slot only when Disney finalized a replacement with Predator: Badlands.
Following the announcement of the December 15, 2028 release date, many fans online speculated that it could mark the debut of Marvel’s X-Men in the MCU. Comments on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), show widespread belief that the untitled film may be Marvel’s first X-Men feature post-Secret Wars.
Marvel has not revealed which film will fill the December 2028 slot. Rumored contenders include Blade, Black Panther 3, Thor 5, Shang-Chi 2, a Fantastic Four sequel, and the long-anticipated X-Men reboot. Marvel tapped Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier to helm its first mutant-focused film.
Scheduled for December 2027, Secret Wars will conclude the Multiverse Saga. After that, Marvel plans to shift focus to characters acquired from 20th Century Fox, including the X-Men, fueling speculation about their debut in 2028.
