Bangladesh's vice-captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz is set to return to the squad for the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo, starting June 25.

The all-rounder, who missed the series opener in Galle due to fever, has recovered and resumed training. On Thursday, Mehidy returned to the training ground in Colombo, with team manager Nafees Iqbal confirming his improved condition.

"He (Mehidy) is much better and came to the ground today," team manager Nafees Iqbal confirmed to Cricbuzz on Thursday.

Notably, Miraz has been an important member in Bangladesh’s Test setup and was recently named vice-captain for the ongoing series, which also records the team’s first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old is coming off a purple patch, having played a crucial role in the home Test series against Zimbabwe earlier this year, where he was named ICC Player of the Month for April. His all-around heroics in Sylhet led the home side to put up a dominating performance.

Sri Lanka trails by 127 runs in first Test

In addition to his Test responsibilities, Mehidy has also been appointed as Bangladesh’s ODI captain for the next 12 months, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto. With 1,617 runs and 110 wickets in 105 ODIs, he is one of the celebrated Bangladeshi all-rounders, joining the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza in achieving the 1000-run, 100-wicket double.

“Captaining the national team is a dream come true. I’m incredibly honoured by the trust the Board has placed in me. This is a proud moment for me and my family. I believe in this group — we have the skills and the mindset to play fearless cricket. I want us to express ourselves confidently, stay committed, and keep playing with heart for the country," Miraz said after his appointment.

Meanwhile, in the first Test, Bangladesh posted 495, thanks to centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim (163) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (148), along with a handy 90 from Litton Das. In reply, the home team's scorecard reads 368/4 and are trailing by 127 runs, after three days of play.
