Northeast India Sees Major Infrastructure Growth with New National Highways

Significant Infrastructure Developments in Northeast India

Aizawl, June 20: Minister of State for Road, Transport & Highways, Harsh Malhotra, announced on Friday that the Northeast region of India has experienced a significant transformation in infrastructure over the last 11 years. This includes the construction of nearly 10,000 kilometers of National Highways, with an investment exceeding Rs 1.07 lakh crore, greatly enhancing connectivity to remote and border areas.


Speaking at the 233rd Mid-Term Council Meeting of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) held at Mizoram University Campus, Malhotra emphasized Prime Minister Modi's dedication to the development of the Northeast, asserting that infrastructure advancement is crucial for realizing the Prime Minister's vision of a developed India by 2047.


He stated, “Infrastructure transcends mere concrete and steel; it is the cornerstone of economic growth, a pathway to prosperity, and embodies the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed India by 2047, which focuses on creating a resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive nation.”


Highlighting the socio-economic benefits of robust infrastructure, he noted that a well-maintained road network fosters prosperity in the region.


The meeting was also attended by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, state Minister Vanlalhlana, and Member of Parliament Richard Vanlalhmangaiha.


Malhotra pointed out that in the past 11 years, the total length of National Highways in India has increased by over 60%, rising from 91,000 kilometers in 2014 to approximately 1.47 lakh kilometers today.


He stressed the importance of adopting the best global technologies and the need to lower construction costs while maintaining quality.


Additionally, Malhotra called for a focus on sustainable development practices, advocating for eco-friendly methods and advanced construction technologies in road building.


He commended the Indian Road Congress for evolving into a comprehensive organization dedicated to improving road infrastructure across the country, with members from both Central and state governments, as well as the Engineering Services of the Army and the Border Roads Organisation.


The minister underscored the IRC's role in overseeing National Highway construction, ensuring that projects adhere to the quality and safety standards set by the government and IRC guidelines.
