Hal isro deal: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is now going to land in the field of rocket manufacturing, taking another big jump in India’s aerospace sector. HAL has achieved this contract by bidding ₹ 511 crore. This contract is jointly given by ISRO and IN-Space.

Who were companies before HAL? (Hal isro deal)

Till now only two private companies were active in the region in India – Skyroate Aerospace (Hyderabad) and Agnikul Cosmos (Chennai). Now HAL, which was still known for making only defense aircraft and helicopters, is also going to play a big role in the space field.

How did HAL get this contract? (Hal isro deal)

  • A total of 9 companies applied for this contract.
  • In the first phase, 6 companies were shortlisted.
  • In the second phase, there was a fight between HAL, Alpha Design and India Dynamics Limited (BDL).
  • Eventually an expert committee declared HAL as the winner. Former Principal Scientific Advisor Vijay Raghavan was also included in this committee.
  • HAL has got this work for Rs 511 crore. Partial payment will be made in the first phase and the remaining amount will be paid in the next two years.

What will HAL do after this? (Hal isro deal)

  • The technology will be transferred to HAL by ISRO for the next two years.
  • During this time HAL will have to prepare two SSLV prototypes.
  • HAL will use the supply chain of ISRO and will not be able to make any changes in the design of the rocket.
  • After two years, HAL will be able to choose its supply chain itself and can take suggestions from ISRO to improve the design.
  • The company aims to create 6 to 12 SSLV units every year, which can be reduced or increased according to the market demand.

What is SSLV? (Hal isro deal)

Small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV) is a compact launch system, which has the capacity to deliver satellites up to 500 kg to a 400–500 km bottom of the Earth orbit.

Its major benefits are:

  • Less cost
  • Projection in short time
  • According to the increasing global demand of small satellites

Why is this step important for India? (Hal isro deal)

  • Currently, India has only 2% stake in the global space economy.
  • The government aims to increase it by 9% by 2030.
  • Participation of a large government institution like HAL will strengthen private-public cooperation.
  • Commercial launchers like SSLV will make India competitive in the global short satellite launch market.

HAL’s new innings (Hal isro deal)

Till now HAL has produced defense techniques like Tejas fighter aircraft, Alh Dhruv helicopter. Now the SSLV project will also enter it into a citizen and space section of aerospace technology.

Stock market stir (Hal isro deal)

  • After this announcement, HAL’s stock rose by 1.18%.
  • The stock closed at ₹ 4,960.
  • Returns of 2.24% in the last 1 month and 18% in 6 months.
  • Although the stock dropped 6.21% in a year, the total market cap of the company is ₹ 3.32 lakh crore.

HAL got this SSLV contract is a historical step towards decentralization of India’s space sector. This will not only increase India’s rocket launching capacity, but ISRO’s role will also be redefined as a competent nodal agency. With the participation of HAL, India’s space mission will now grow rapidly towards private investment, industrial efficiency and technical self -sufficiency.
