Aamir Khan’s latest film Sitaare Zameen Par has seen a modest overseas opening, collecting approximately USD 800K (Rs. 6.75 crore) on its first day. While the numbers are on the lower side for an Aamir Khan starrer, they are still slightly ahead of what early pre-sales had projected just days prior.

Regional Performance Breakdown
The Middle East emerged as the strongest market, contributing around USD 300K on day one a decent figure for the film’s genre and better than Aamir’s previous film Laal Singh Chaddha. In contrast, the United States brought in under USD 200K, while the United Kingdom managed to cross just GBP 50K.

The film had limited screenings in several key international markets, especially in regions where Hindi films typically perform well. However, where it did release, occupancies were healthy, suggesting a targeted strategy by the distributors — one similar to the limited domestic release approach.

Low Start, But Long-Term Potential
While Sitaare Zameen Par is not expected to hit typical A-lister benchmarks on opening day, the goal appears to be longer sustainability rather than a flashy start. The film is currently aiming for a USD 2.5 million weekend, which would be a decent performance considering its niche appeal and post-COVID challenges faced by similar genres.

Encouragingly, early word of mouth is positive, which could help the film build momentum in the coming days. A comparable case is Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, which had a slow start but eventually legged out to over USD 20 million globally. Sitaare Zameen Par will be eyeing a USD 10 million total, which would mark a solid performance for this genre and scale.
