Many stars in the film industry have found success in ventures beyond acting. Some have taken on the philanthropic task of offering affordable meals to the public by opening their eateries. A notable example is singer Arijit Singh who runs a restaurant in his hometown of Murshidabad where a full meal costs only 40 rupees. However today were highlighting the initiative that began years ago providing meals for just 5 rupees and continues to thrive. The Famous Amma Canteen Here we are talking about Amma Canteen launched in 2013 by Late J. Jayalalithaa the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and a prominent figure in the film industry. It is regarded as the most affordable canteen in India. Although it operates on a subsidy the quality and taste of the meals remain uncompromised. The current Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has continued the program due to its overwhelming popularity. At Amma Canteen customers can enjoy idlis for just 1 rupee and sambar rice for only 5 rupees making it a significant relief for the common man. A unique aspect of this canteen is that it offers employment opportunities to women. The canteens serve exclusively vegetarian food and operate as a non-profit venture managed collaboratively by the Tamil Nadu government and the Municipal Corporation. There are over 300 Amma Canteens throughout the state with more than half located in Chennai providing breakfast lunch and dinner at very reasonable prices. Additionally theres a board outside each Amma Canteen displaying the food timetable and pricing. Breakfast is available from 7 am to 10 am offering idlis for just 1 rupee and Pongal rice for 5 rupees. Lunch is served from 12 pm to 3 pm with prices ranging from 3 to 5 rupees for dishes like sambar-rice lemon rice and curd rice. For dinner from 5 to 7:30 pm customers can enjoy 2 chapatis and dal for just 3 rupees which is a tremendous benefit for those in need. More About Jayalalithaa J. Jayalalithaa began her career at the age of 15 encouraged by her mother Sandhya to enter the film industry. She debuted in 1965 with the Tamil film Venniradai and appeared in over 300 films notably collaborating with superstar Late M. G. Ramachandran (referred to by his fans as MGR) with whom she was romantically linked. Later she transitioned into politics and served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu six times. In the 2016 assembly elections she made history as the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu to be re-elected since M.G.R. in 1984. However in September of that year she became critically ill. After spending 75 days in the hospital she passed away from cardiac arrest on December 5 2016 becoming the first female chief minister in India to die while in office. For the unversed Jayalalithaa was never married and had no children.
