Weight lifting is one of the most important aspects of strength training. It helps to increase muscle mass, improve bone density, enhance metabolism, and also lead to a better cardiovascular health. However, some people believe that lifting weights can damage the bones and muscles over time. Celebrity fitness trainer Vinod Channa recently busted this myth and stated the facts.
Taking to his website, Vinod Channa addressed this widespread myth that often discourages people from incorporating strength training into their fitness routines. Some people believe that lifting heavy weights can harm bones and muscles over time. Talking about this myth, Vinod said, “I disagree because whoever lifts the heavier weight slowly and steadily increases their strength from 5 pounds to 100kgs with appropriate nutrition.”
Vinod emphasised that weightlifting is a gradual process. He explained, “But it’s a slow process and everyone can gain strength with progressive overload and at a certain level, they have that much strength that they can perform with heavyweight which is not possible for people who do not exercise and have a target to reach that level with slow steady and increasing proper weight.”
He highlighted the importance of proper nutrition – especially protein, carbohydrates, and fibre – to prepare the body for progressive overload. “If you are lifting heavier weights and not providing your body with proper nutrition, or if you are not lifting in the technically correct way, sudden lift more than your capacity will make you injured,” Vinod added.
Breaking down the concept for his followers, Vinod explained that when we lift 100 kilos, the body breaks down muscle equivalent to that weight, which requires adequate recovery. Providing the right nutrients helps the body repair and build strength more efficiently, eventually allowing one to lift heavier weights safely. He also cautioned that neglecting nutrition can lead to long-term harm to bones and muscles. “Nutrition should be taken according to the intensity of the workout and to get benefit from exercise,” he said.
