CBSE Schools: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed to implement mother tongue-based education from the 2025-26 session. This decision has been taken to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. Under this policy, the mother tongue or regional language will be made the main medium of study from pre-primary to class 2. Kendriya Vidyalaya has planned to divide the classes based on mother tongue to implement this rule.

With this initiative of CBSE, children will get early education in their mother tongue. This will increase their interest in studies and it will also become easier to understand things. Students from diverse linguistic backgrounds study in Kendriya Vidyalaya affiliated with CBSE (Kendriya Vidyalaya). Therefore, a special strategy is being adopted to implement this rule in KV. Dividing classes based on mother tongue will strengthen the mental and emotional development of children. But many challenges will also come in this process.

CBSE's new rule: Why is mother tongue important?

CBSE had issued a circular on 22 May 2025. It is written in it that it is mandatory to make the mother tongue or familiar regional language the medium of study from pre-primary to class 2. This rule is based on the theory of NEP 2020. According to it, children learn better in their mother tongue. This increases the understanding, confidence, and cultural connection of children. If it is not possible to implement the mother tongue, then the state language will be given priority. At least 1 Indian language will be made the medium of study from classes 3 to 5.

This is how studies will be done in Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Hindi, English, and regional languages are taught in Kendriya Vidyalaya. Now there is a plan to divide classes based on mother tongue in KV. For example, Hindi-speaking children can be taught in one class, Marathi-speaking in another and other regional language-speaking children in the third. This will enable teachers to customize studies according to the linguistic background of the children. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has directed schools to form an 'NCF Implementation Committee'. This committee will prepare appropriate study material by surveying the mother tongue of the students.

Many challenges will be faced.

In urban areas like Delhi or Mumbai, the linguistic diversity of students is high. Implementing this policy there can be challenging. It is difficult to choose a common language when there are many mother tongues in a class. For this, Kendriya Vidyalaya is training teachers in multilingual education. It will be completed in July 2025. NCERT has prepared books in 22 Indian languages for class 1 and 2. This will help in making this process easier. Schools have been given the freedom to submit monthly progress reports and take extra time if needed.

Benefits of studying in the mother tongue

Mother tongue-based education i.e. studying in a familiar language will increase the learning ability of children. This policy will strengthen their cultural identity. Along with this, the reach of education will also increase in rural areas. However, some parents prefer English medium. Because of this, this policy of CBSE can also be opposed. Kendriya Vidyalaya is planning to implement this change gradually and make the parents aware.
