Joe Root matches Rahul Dravid’s world record of taking most catches in Test cricket

New Delhi: Joe Root matched the world record set by Rahul Dravid in terms of the most number of catches by a non-wicketkeeper in the Test match when he pulled off a catch that dismissed Shardul Thakur off a Josh Tongue bowling delivery on Monday June 23. Dravid played 164 Test matches caught 210 catches in 301 innings. Root managed to equal that tally in only 293 innings in 154 Tests for England.
In the first innings Root grabbed KL Rahuls catch.
This dismissal of Shardul Thakur in the third session of Day 4 did not only assist Joe Root to equal the world record of Rahul Dravid but he also achieved another Milestone. Alastair Cook who holds the world record of most catches made in India-England Test matches. Cook who played 30 Tests against India in a 12-year career took 38 catches. Having caught Shardul Root now boasts 38 dismissals in his 31-Test matches against India equalling the mark of former England skipper.
Joe Root has so far made 102 catches in the 65 World Test Championship matches for England making him the second-highest catcher in the history of the tournament. He is only behind Australias Steve Smith who has 104 catches in 102 innings in 53 WTC matches representing Baggy Greens. Root has remained constant in the slip cordon which remains a crucial strength to England across the red-ball game.
Backed by those master centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (128) India posted 364 runs in the second innings on Monday giving England a difficult target of 371 in the fourth innings of this ongoing Test at Headingley Leeds.
For England Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse headed the bowling attack taking three wickets each in the 2nd innings of India to ensure that India could not score big like in the first innings and were made to stop at 364.
