Sullia: A massive pile of waste has once again taken over the Sullia Town Municipal Council (TMC) shed, causing concern among visitors and residents. Bags filled with dry and wet waste have been stacked inside the shed, creating a foul environment.

Due to lack of a designated space for proper waste disposal within the TMC limits, the municipal shed premises were earlier used as a temporary dumping site. The accumulation had led to political criticism, following which the TMC had cleared the waste.

However, the situation has repeated. Bags filled with unsorted waste continue to pile up daily, with little evidence of disposal. Dry waste, which is supposed to be transferred to the Kalcharpe waste processing unit, remains stagnant in the shed.

According to municipal workers, they collect household waste every day, separate it at the shed, and bag it for further processing. However, the dry waste is not being regularly transferred to Kalcharpe, which has led to a backlog.

The Kalcharpe unit uses a gasification machine to incinerate up to 800 kg of dry waste per day. But due to frequent technical failures, the machine is underperforming, causing a slowdown in waste processing. As a result, dry waste from the shed is not being moved in adequate quantities, leading to further accumulation.

Sources indicate that the continued technical issues at Kalcharpe and lack of timely response by officials have contributed to the worsening of the garbage situation in Sullia.

Speaking to the media, TMC President Shashikala A. Neerabidire said, “The gasification unit at Kalcharpe has been breaking down frequently, making it difficult to process waste as planned. I have already conducted a meeting regarding this issue. We are making all efforts to clear the shed at the earliest.”
