ENG vs IND: KL Rahul was extremely disappointed after he missed out on a half-century in the first innings of the first Test against England. A minor lapse in concentration led to his downfall. In the second outing, he made sure to make amends, scoring a sublime hundred, 137 off 247 balls, helping India set up a daunting 371-run target to win the series opener.

The 33-year-old has been one of India’s better performers with the bat, scoring centuries in Australia, South Africa, and England, with his latest ton at Headingly being his third on English soil.

The right-hander, who has opened for the majority of his career, has batted in different positions, as low as number six in Test cricket. While opening slot is where he has been most comfortable, he was pushed up and down the batting order, especially after the rise of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

After a few years of uncertainty under the previous management, KL Rahul regained his opening spot on the last tour of Australia when Rohit Sharma missed the opening match due to personal reasons.

Rahul charmed everyone with his disciplined batting, forcing Rohit to bat lower down the order when he returned for the next game.

Talking to the reporters at the end of the penultimate day of the Leeds Test, KL Rahul said that even though he loved shouldering different responsibilities for the team, he had forgotten what his position was in the team. Many believed it was a sly dig at the old team management, which had continued to use him at their convenience.

“In the last couple of years, I've forgotten what my position is and what I am comfortable doing. I'm happy to be given different responsibilities and roles. It makes the game exciting and makes me want to challenge myself and train that much harder. I have quite enjoyed doing that,” said KL Rahul.

The Karnataka batter added that his return at the top of the order has finally made him happy with his role in the team, and he is happy contributing to the team’s cause.

“The last couple of series, my role has been to open the batting. That is something that I did growing up and in my early career. I am happy that I am back doing that and I am happy that I am doing the job for the team,” he added.

Meanwhile, England made a good start to their run chase, ending the day at 21 for no loss, needing exactly 350 more on the final day.
