Tripura's Literacy Milestone

On Monday, the Union government announced that Tripura has become the third state in India to attain full functional literacy, following Mizoram and Goa.

The Ministry of Education revealed that Tripura achieved this status under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, a national initiative aimed at promoting adult literacy, which was launched in 2022.

During a ceremony in Agartala, Chief Minister Manik Saha hailed this achievement as a significant milestone in the state's pursuit of complete literacy. He noted that the literacy rate has soared to 95.6%, a substantial increase from just 20.24% in 1961.

To be recognized as fully literate, states must meet a national benchmark of 95% literacy among individuals aged 15 and older.

Preeti Meena, the director of the Adult Literacy Department at the Ministry of Education, stated that the government aims to make India fully literate by 2030. She mentioned that in Tripura, 23,184 illiterate adults were identified and assisted to reach this goal.

Mizoram was the first state to be declared fully literate on May 20, followed by Goa on May 30.
