Lewis Capaldi made a surprise return to Glastonbury today - with a secret slot on the iconic Pyramid Stage. The 27-year-old singer-songwriter, who stepped away from music nearly two years ago to focus on his health, made his big comeback this afternoon. The slot, still officially listed as TBA, lasted just 35 minutes - shorter than a standard set - adding to speculation that it's been deliberately kept low-key to ease Capaldi back into the spotlight.
The Someone You Loved star last performed publicly at Glastonbury in 2023, but the show ended early as he visibly struggled on stage with tics brought on by Tourette's syndrome. He was unable to sing, prompting the entire Pyramid Stage crowd to belt out the lyrics in support. The moment was seen around the world and led Capaldi to announce a break from live performing, saying he needed to prioritise his mental and physical wellbeing.
Fans flocked to X to comment on his performance, with one writing: "Absolutely deserved massive crowd for Lewis Capaldi #Glastonbury." Another said: "I am sobbing at his set." Someone else said: "Why am I crying over Lewis Capaldi coming out at Glastonbury! I'm an idiot?" " He's amazing! I genuinely didn't think he would come back, but it looks like he's hopefully over the ticks he had," someone penned. Another wrote: "What a brave young man. So happy for him."
Posters teasing a "celebrity lookalike contest" began popping up around Worthy Farm on Thursday night, featuring Capaldi's face and the line: "Absolutely zero cash prize" for the winner.
Fans who texted the number on the flyer were sent a link to his official website, all but confirming that Capaldi's team orchestrated the stunt.
The cheeky posters appear to be classic Capaldi - known just as much for his dry humour as his gut-punch ballads - but the real story is the emotional weight of today's return.
A source told The Sun yesterday: "Lewis took a decent chunk of time away, and now he's ready for his fans to hear what he has been working on. Tomorrow is a huge day for him. He will be releasing a brand new single and it is his Pyramid Stage performance. He is in a great place and feels ready to come back into the spotlight."
Since his last Glasto performance, he's largely stayed out of the spotlight - only resurfacing in May this year for a low-key charity gig in Edinburgh to raise money for suicide prevention.
Now, with a new single Survive released this morning, The Scottish hitmaker is officially back.
His return comes on one of the busiest days of the festival so far, as huge names like The 1975, Alanis Morissette and Biffy Clyro prepare to perform on the Pyramid Stage.
Also lighting up the bill today are indie favourites Wet Leg, who'll play the Other Stage alongside Gracie Abrams and Loyle Carner.
Over on West Holts, Maribou State are set to headline, while Four Tet closes out the night at Woodsies.
Sir Rod Stewart is also set to make his Glastonbury comeback with a much-anticipated legends slot on the Pyramid Stage this Sunday at 4pm.
Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts will headline the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night, taking to the main stage from 10pm until around 11.45pm - set to be one of the weekend's standout performances.
