Kolkata: The incident of alleged gang rape of a student in Law College, Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has also heated politics in the entire West Bengal. In this case, the BJP has fiercely attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government. Union Minister of State for Education and Bengal BJP President Sukant Majumdar said that the incident states that daughters are not safe in educational institutions of the state and Mamta government’s law and order has completely failed.
Majumdar said that this is not the first time that there was a serious crime with the girl students in the state. He also mentioned the incident of RG Kar Medical College in which a female doctor was murdered after raping her. He claimed that the accused arrested in the recent case included a student leader of a Trinamool Congress, which further enhances the seriousness of the situation.
Opposition attack intensified, demand for resignation
Leader of Opposition in Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari has also strongly condemned the incident. He demanded his resignation from Mamata Banerjee, saying that she is no longer worth becoming the Chief Minister. Suvendu also alleged that when a student was being raped in the state capital, the top officials of Kolkata Police were present with the Chief Minister in the Rath Yatra in Digha.
Suvendu has announced that the BJP will start a major agitation in protest against the incident and there will be protests across the state. He also accused the state government of giving protection to criminals in student politics.
Trinamool reversed, said- do not do politics on crime
State Vice President of Trinamool Congress Jayaprakash Majumdar has retaliated on the BJP regarding this matter. He said that BJP leaders should cooperate to stop crime instead of giving political color to every incident. Jayaprakash said that the government is investigating and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
At present, the Kolkata police have arrested the three accused and the victim’s statement has been recorded. But amidst political allegations and counter-allegations, this matter has now become a question of credibility of power, not only law and order.
