In a crucial development regarding the ongoing investigation into the alleged gang rape of a student at South Kolkata Law College, police have apprehended security guard Pinaki Banerjee. This marks the fourth arrest in the case, which has sparked public outrage and calls for swift justice. Banerjee, aged 55, resides in Naskarhat Khalpara Southpara, near Ramnath Ghosh Garden Road under the jurisdiction of Khardah police station and Mahabir Multi Gym under Kasba police station. He was taken into custody by the Kasba police due to his suspected involvement in the incident that occurred on the college campus last Saturday.
Authorities are investigating whether Banerjee was alone on duty at the time of the incident. The event took place on the evening of June 25 at South Kolkata Law College. Officials stated that the guard failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his inaction and why he did not intervene to prevent the three accused from committing the crime. Additionally, he must clarify why he left his post and under whose orders, as this could indicate his complicity in the crime.
A first-year student at South Kolkata Law College reported to the police that on the evening of June 25, she was gang-raped by a former student of the institution and two senior students. The three accused were arrested on Thursday, and the victim underwent a medical examination the same day. The examination revealed external injuries to her genital area and thighs, as well as marks around her neck. Police suspect that the main accused orchestrated the attack in retaliation for the victim rejecting a marriage proposal. The medical examination confirmed that the student was indeed a victim of gang rape.
