The Canadian government has banned a big Chinese company. The Carney government has taken this step in view of the threat to national security.

Canada-China Relations: Canada has given a big blow to China. The Canadian government has issued an order asking a big Chinese company to shut down all operations in the country. The Carney government has taken this step keeping in mind national security.

Canadian Industry Minister Melonie Joly said on Friday (June 27, 2025) that the government has ordered Chinese surveillance equipment maker Hikvision to stop working in Canada. She said that Hikvision's work in the country would be a threat to national security. Joly said that this decision has been taken on the basis of information provided by Canadian security and intelligence agencies.

Hikvision company has already been on the radar of many international investigative agencies. The US has already blacklisted the company and the European Union has also raised many questions on it. It is alleged that Hikvision's products have been used by the Chinese government for surveillance, human rights violations and even persecution of Uighur Muslims. This move by Canada becomes even more important in this context because it is not just a technical ban but also a diplomatic message that Canada gives top priority to the security of its digital borders.

Will tensions between China and Canada increase?

Relations between Canada and China are already going through a delicate phase. Huawei, the arrest of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, the Hong Kong policy and now the Hikvision ban, all these incidents have become the cause of tension in the relations between the two countries. Now it remains to be seen how Beijing reacts to this decision.

China may term Canada's move as politically motivated. This may further affect trade and diplomatic dialogue. Apart from this, Canada has accused China of working in a wrong and secretive manner in the country.
