Dhaka. Prominent human rights activist Manjil Murshid has made a big claim regarding the interim government and elections of Bangladesh. He said that the Mohammad Yunus government is not legitimate under the Constitution of Bangladesh. It is hoped that the upcoming elections will establish democratic rights and after this the picture will change.

Manjil Murshid, president of Human Rights and Peace Bangladesh, said Bangladesh did not work according to the law after August 5. Muhammad Yunus came to power as an interim government. While there is no provision about a caretaker government in the Constitution. A conspiracy took place after August 5. The country did not move forward to hold free, fair and inclusive elections as demanded by the people.

Murshid said that now if elections are held, the picture will change. When a party comes to power, we hope that our democratic rights will be established. At the same time, a political party cannot deprive another political party of the right to work and carry out its activities, because political parties are basically about politics and democracy. But the current government is not a government of a political party.

He said that Mohammad Yunus took power and for a long time he did not say anything about elections. He always kept saying that after completing various reforms which take five years, he will announce elections. Some supporters of the government also share this view. When the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) raised its voice about elections, the picture changed.

Murshid said that earlier the interim government wanted to postpone the elections till 2026. When Mohammad Yunus went to London and met BNP’s acting chairman Tariq Rahman. After this, a joint declaration was issued that elections will be held in February. But still there is no certainty as the Election Commission has not yet announced the schedule.
