Europe is home to some of the most beautiful and charming islands in the world. The destinations often boasts not only beauty but a rich cultural heritage with so much to explore. Greece holidays, is one of the continenant most popular countries home to a number of stunning islands, including its largest and most populous one, Crete.
Crete draws millions of holidaymakers every year with travellers jetting over to make the most out of the countries warm climate, remarkable historical sites, and of course the breath taking beaches. In fact, visitors often compare the island's sandy stretches to ones you would find in the Caribbean.
The island is home to some of the world's best beaches, including Elafonissi Beach, renowned for its pink sands and turquoise waters. The incredible beach was placed at the top spot of TripAdvisor's Best of Best Beaches list, as part of the travel company's Travellers' Choice Awards.
Another must see spot on the island is Balos Lagoon. According to TripAdvisor, the lagoon which boasts "hypnotising turquoise waters and a panoramic landscape" is one of Crete's most photographed spots.
Balos Lagoon, which has a rating of 4.5 out of five, also featured in TripAdvisor's Best of Best category, with visitors emphasising just how incredible the spot is.
"This beach is just paradise. It's as though you are somewhere is the Caribbean. Warm, clear water, amazing snorkelling," one person wrote.
Another said: "I've travelled a lot, I adore sea and beaches, I've visited the Caribbean, Pacific, Indian and Atlantic sea but.. this is now one of my favorite beaches in the world."
The popular destinaton is accesible by ferry from Kissamos or those who are up for a challenge can take on a scenic, but sometimes difficult drive and walk to the lagoon. However, those that have said it is well worth it.
A visitor who visited in May and walked the road up said: "We stayed nearby, so we were there early, the road is drivable in any car as long as you take it slow. The views from above in the morning light were stupendous. The walk down and up is not easy but again go slowly, wear good shoes and take water with you.
"We walked around, swam, relaxed and by the time we were leaving, more and more people started to arrive. The drive back actually felt more difficult due to all the cars coming the other way. Needless to say we greatly enjoyed our morning here."
Crete reaches temperatures up to 29C in July. The warm climate, combined with the world-class beaches makes it the perfect spot holidaymakers to enjoy a for a sun-filled escape.
