Russia on Tuesday unleashed its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the conflict began, with the Ukrainian Air Force verifying that 537 aerial weapons, including more than 500 drones and dozens of missiles, were used overnight.
The massive assault had 477 drones and air decoys and 60 missiles, said Yuriy Ihnat, communications chief for Ukraine's Air Force. Of those, Ukrainian troops brought down 249 airborne threats, and another 226 were either electronically jammed or lost. "The nighttime barrage was the biggest aerial attack on Ukraine if counting both drones and different kinds of missiles," Ihnat said to the Associated Press. The attack hit several regions away from the frontline, such as Lviv, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy. Poland and NATO nations scrambled fighter jets to defend Polish airspace in the face of the cross-border threat, the Polish Air Force stated. Local administrations reported the damage to residential houses, infrastructure, and industrial plants. One individual was killed by a drone attack in the Kherson region, and six others, including a child were hurt in Cherkasy. Cherkasy Governor Ihor Taburets reported that three multi-storey buildings and a college were damaged in the strike. Industrial enterprises suffered damage in Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Photographs posted by regional authorities demonstrated burnt-down apartment houses and broken windows as rescuers evacuated residents. Lviv region Governor Maksym Kozytskyi reported that the attacks struck critical infrastructure, though information on the extent of the damage is still being evaluated. Ukraine Loses Third F-16 Fighter Jet Ukraine's military confirmed the loss of its third F-16 fighter plane since the beginning of the war. The pilot, who was killed in the attack, was said to have shot down seven aerial targets before his plane was hit and crashed. The pilot employed all of his onboard ammunition and downed seven aerial targets. In attacking the last one, his plane was damaged and lost altitude," Ukraine's Air Force wrote on Telegram. "He did everything to turn the jet out of residential areas but had no time to eject." "Almost all night, air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine - there were 477 drones in our skies, most of them Russian-Iranian 'Shaheds," and 60 missiles of various types. The "Russkies" struck at everything that sustains life. There was a hit on a residential building in Smila, and a child was injured. Emergency services are working everywhere they are needed. Unfortunately, while repelling the attack, our F-16 pilot Maksym Ustymenko, was killed. Today, he destroyed seven aerial targets. My condolences to his family and comrades. I have ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of his death. Ukrainian aviation is heroically defending our skies. Thank you to everyone protecting Ukraine," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted this on X, condemning the attack.
"Moscow will not stop as long as it has the ability to carry out massive strikes. Just this week, there were over 114 missiles, more than 1270 drones, and nearly 1100 KABs. Putin decided long ago to keep fighting despite the world's calls for peace. We need to end the war, we need pressure on the aggressor, we need protection. From ballistics, missiles, and drones, from terror. Ukraine needs to strengthen its air defense. This is what best protects lives. These are American systems that we are ready to buy. We count on leadership, political will, and support from the United States, Europe, and all our partners. Thank you to everyone who is helping," he added. The heavy air bombardment happened only days after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Moscow was prepared for a fresh round of direct peace talks in Istanbul. But hopes for a breakthrough continue to be slim, with recent US-sponsored diplomacy failing to yield any progress. Drone warfare has emerged as a characteristic of the conflict, which is in its fourth year. Both sides are constantly investing in more advanced and lethal drone technology, and making Ukraine a test bed for new aerial weapons.
