A West Indies cricketer on the national team is facing serious accusations of sexual harassment and rape. A Caribbean media outlet reports that eleven women, including a teenager, are accusing the player of rape, sexual assault, or unwanted advances.
Kaieteur News says the cricketer is from Guyana. Apparently, several women filed complaints with the police there, but the report suggests there have been efforts to bury the issue.
One woman who recently reported an incident to the Guyana Police Force became so upset during questioning that she had to go to the hospital. Local media say an investigation is happening now.
The family of one woman says she was sexually assaulted by the cricketer on March 3, 2023. She was 18 at the time. They say it happened at a house in New Amsterdam, Berbice. According to the news report, the accused, who the family knew, picked her up from work, saying they were going to hang out.
She felt okay at first because there were other men outside the house. But once inside, the cricketer allegedly took her upstairs and assaulted her. The family believes law enforcement is trying to cover it all up. The victim’s mother says her daughter trusted the accused and is heartbroken since it happened.
Since the initial report by Kaieteur News, more women have come forward with similar stories, providing proof like screenshots, messages, voice notes, and medical records.
Several survivors say they’re tired of being questioned over and over and not getting any help from the system. Some claim their earlier complaints were ignored or dismissed without much attention, according to the report.
When asked by a major TV channel if they knew about the accusations, Cricket West Indies (CWI) said they didn’t.
SportsMax 18 quoted CWI President Kishore Shallow as saying, Cricket West Indies is unaware of the circumstances and, therefore, is not able to say anything right now.
These accusations are coming out while the West Indies men’s Test team, led by Roston Chase, is playing Australia in the World Test Championship.
