Mumbai: In the Hindu tradition, Masik Durga Ashtami—the monthly observance of the eighth lunar day in Shukla Paksha—is a deeply auspicious day dedicated to Goddess Durga. Observed with devotion and rituals, this day is considered ideal for seeking the divine blessings of Maa Durga for protection, prosperity, and the resolution of life’s hardships. It is widely believed that donating on this sacred day pleases the Goddess and invites peace, abundance, and success into one’s home and life.
According to Drik Panchang, the Ashadha Masik Durga Ashtami in 2025 will begin at 11:58 AM on Wednesday, 2 July, and end at 2:06 PM on Thursday, 3 July. As per the tradition of observing fasts based on Udaya Tithi (sunrise-based calendar), the monthly Durga Ashtami fast will be observed on Thursday, 3 July 2025, and the fast-breaking ritual (paran) will take place on Friday, 4 July.
Red is especially dear to Goddess Durga as it symbolises power, energy, love, and auspiciousness. Donating a red sari, dupatta, or chunri to a temple, a married woman (suhaagin), or a young girl on this day is considered highly rewarding. It brings blessings of good fortune, prosperity, and vibrant energy into one’s life.
Durga is the embodiment of divine feminine grace and beauty. Offering shringar items such as sindoor (vermilion), red bangles, bindis, mehendi, kajal, mahavar, and red scarves is seen as a gesture of honouring her divine form. When gifted to a married woman or offered at a temple, it blesses the devotee with marital harmony and unbroken good fortune (akhand saubhagya). It also invites Goddess Lakshmi to reside in one’s home.
Ghee symbolises purity, prosperity, and divine nourishment. Donating cow ghee—especially in temples or to those in need—is believed to reduce the malefic effects of planets like the Sun, Moon, Mars, and Jupiter, according to Vedic astrology. This act enhances spiritual merit and brings financial stability.
Barley is a sacred grain and symbol of creation. Offering barley to deities or donating it to a Brahmin is believed to ensure food and financial abundance in one’s home. It also strengthens the influence of Jupiter (Brihaspati) in one’s horoscope, bringing wisdom and growth.
Sweet dishes like kheer (rice pudding) or halwa (semolina dessert) are favoured by Goddess Durga. Preparing these at home and distributing them among girls (kanya pujan) or feeding the poor is considered an act of devotion. It draws divine blessings, eliminates sorrows, and increases happiness and wealth.
Donating grains, particularly rice or wheat, is regarded as one of the highest forms of charity. Offering grains on Durga Ashtami ensures that your home is never devoid of food and that prosperity remains. You may donate to a local family in need or a charitable food service.
