MS Dhoni, one of India’s greatest white-ball captains, has taken a big step outside the cricket field. On June 5, 2025, he filed an application to trademark ‘Captain Cool’, a nickname fans have lovingly used for years. Now, the name that reflects his calm leadership style could become his official brand.

His Application Has Been Accepted

As per a report by India Today, Dhoni’s request has been approved by the Trademark Office. The name ‘Captain Cool’ was also published in the official journal on June 16, 2025. This gives Dhoni the exclusive right to use this name for his future business ideas in sports and training.

Just like Cristiano Ronaldo has ‘CR7’, Michael Jordan has ‘Jumpman’, and Sourav Ganguly owns ‘Dada’, now Dhoni has ‘Captain Cool’.

The Legal Hurdle

Dhoni’s lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal, said that when they first applied, the Trademark Office raised a concern. They said another similar name already existed, and it might confuse people.

MS Dhoni’s lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal said:

“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal."

But Dhoni’s team explained that ‘Captain Cool’ is clearly linked to Dhoni, and people have used it for him for many years. They said it is part of his public identity, and there was no chance of confusion because it would only be used for sports and entertainment.

The Trademark Office agreed and accepted that ‘Captain Cool’ is more than just a nickname — it’s part of Dhoni’s brand and image.

Why This is Important

Dhoni got the name ‘Captain Cool’ because of how calmly he led India to win:

  • The 2007 T20 World Cup
  • The 2011 ODI World Cup
  • The 2013 Champions Trophy

People adore Dhoni due to his composed personality and intelligent captaincy. Now that he has this name, he is allowed to use it for business purposes in the future. This reveals how popular players like Dhoni are leveraging their popular names to create their own brand and legally safeguard it.
