Ongoing Violence in Manipur

Manipur continues to experience unrest. While officials assert that violence has significantly decreased since the imposition of President's Rule in February, with fewer civilian casualties and an increase in drug seizures, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Security forces, including the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles, are actively working to recover thousands of weapons looted from police arsenals during the violence in May 2023. However, tensions remain high, with reports of individuals still thirsting for blood. Recent developments have emerged from Churachandpur in Manipur.

Shooting Incident in Churachandpur

In Churachandpur district, unknown gunmen shot and killed at least four individuals, including a 60-year-old woman, on Monday, according to police reports. A police officer indicated that the ambush occurred around 2 PM near Mongjang village while the victims were traveling in a vehicle. Mongjang is located approximately seven kilometers from Churachandpur city.

An official from the Churachandpur district headquarters noted that the victims appeared to have been shot at close range. Their identities have not yet been disclosed. Over twelve empty cartridges were recovered from the scene, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Additional police and security forces have been deployed to the area.

Arrests of Militants in Manipur

Earlier, security forces apprehended three militants from various banned organizations in the Imphal West and East districts of Manipur. According to police, one militant from the banned People's Liberation Army (PLA) was arrested on Sunday in Lamdeng Awang Leikai, identified as Yumnaam Premkumar Singh (31). He was involved in extortion activities targeting elected representatives and schools in the district.

Additionally, an active member of the banned PREPAK (PRO) was captured on Saturday in Heirangoi Thong, identified as Kangbam Raju Singh (42). Another militant from KCP (Noyon/MFL) was arrested in Nongpok Sanjenbam Khullen in Imphal East, identified as Manoharmayum Kabichandra Sharma, also known as Rajo. Meanwhile, a bomb disposal squad safely defused a 51 mm ILLG bomb planted in Bishnupur district's Terakhongshangbi Maning Laithal, with shrapnel collected for investigation.
