In a shocking incident in the Churachandpur district of Manipur, unidentified gunmen opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a 60-year-old woman. The attack occurred around 2 PM near Mongjang village while the victims were traveling in a car. An official from the Churachandpur district headquarters informed that initial reports indicate the victims were shot at close range. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, over twelve empty cartridges were recovered from the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed. Authorities reported that since the imposition of President's Rule in February, there has been a significant reduction in violence in Manipur, with a notable decrease in civilian casualties and injuries, alongside an increase in drug seizures.
Furthermore, it was noted that the Manipur police, along with the Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces, have been tirelessly working to recover thousands of weapons looted from police armories since the outbreak of violence in May 2023. Despite the relative calm, recovering the thousands of lost weapons remains a challenge for security forces, as they also contend with activities from banned valley-based terrorist groups involved in extortion and petty crimes.
