Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies at 28: His 10-days old wedding pics are breaking our heart

In heartbreaking news that has left the football world in shock, Liverpool star Diogo Jota tragically passed away in a car accident near Zamora, Spain, early this morning, July 3. The 27-year-old Portuguese star had only just celebrated one of the happiest days of his life — his wedding to his longtime love Rute Cardoso — just 10 days earlier.
The couple, who had been together since their teenage years, tied the knot on June 22, surrounded by their three children and loved ones. Just hours before the fatal crash, Rute had shared an emotional wedding video on social media with the caption: “A day we will never forget.” Their wedding video has since then gone viral; while her words now carry a painful weight.
On his much-awaited wedding day, Diogo had also shared some beautiful pictures with his wife-- which reflected their deep love and commitment to each other. The beautiful couple had just begun their married life together, when life took a cruel turn for Rute and her three little children.
Diogo Jota's tragic accident
According to reports by Marca and Daily Mail, Diogo was traveling with his brother André Silva, who was also a professional footballer, when their car veered off the road near Sanabria in the Zamora province. Witnesses described the vehicle bursting into flames upon impact, with the fire even spreading to nearby vegetation. Emergency responders confirmed that both men died at the scene.
Back in Portugal, Rute Cardoso remains surrounded by family, trying to shield their three young children from the tragedy. Sources close to the family say his funeral is likely to be held in Porto.
Diogo Jota's professional life
The news of Diogo and André's tragic deaths plunged the world of Portuguese and international football into mourning. Pedro Proença, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, said in a statement, “We are devastated. Diogo was more than an incredible player with nearly 50 caps for the national team. He was a beautiful soul — full of joy, kindness, and humility. We’ve lost two champions today.”
The Federation has declared three days of national mourning and requested a minute of silence before Portugal’s next UEFA Women’s Euro match.
Diogo Jota’s journey was one of passion, perseverance, and pride. Since joining Liverpool in 2020, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped the team lift the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles. For Portugal, he was a proud contributor to the UEFA Nations League victories.
As tributes pour in from fans, teammates, and clubs around the world, one thing is clear: Diogo Jota's legacy will never be forgotten.
