Football fans across the globe are mourning the death of Portuguese and Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in northern Spain. He was 28. His younger brother, André Silva, also lost his life. He was 26.
The crash occurred early Thursday morning on a highway in northern Spain. According to local authorities, the car lost control on a wet road. First responders arrived quickly but couldn’t save either of them.
Cristiano Ronaldo reacted with deep sorrow on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“It all feels meaningless. We were just with the national team, and you had just gotten married,” he wrote.
He added, “I send my condolences to your family, your wife, and your children. May they find strength and courage.”
Ronaldo ended his message with a heartfelt goodbye: “Diogo and André, rest in peace. We will miss you deeply.” His tribute went viral within hours.
Diogo Jota earned 49 caps with the Portugal national team. He contributed to the UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025. He made his international debut in November 2019 against Lithuania. In that match, Jota came on to replace Ronaldo in the second half.
Jota quickly built a reputation for his speed, versatility, and scoring ability. At Liverpool, he played a key role in several campaigns, both in the Premier League and European competitions.
The accident also claimed the life of André Silvawho worked with youth football programs in Portugal. Tributes from teammates, coaches, and fans have continued to pour in since the news broke.
Liverpool Football Club issued a statement:
“We are heartbroken by the loss of Diogo and André. Diogo was not only a talented player but also a beloved teammate and friend.”
The Portuguese Football Federation echoed these sentiments. They described Jota as a model athlete who gave everything for his country.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his condolences and called the news “heartbreaking.” Clubs across Europe paused training sessions to honor the fallen brothers. Fans gathered at stadiums in Portugal and Liverpool to pay tribute with flowers, candles, and personal messages.
