The third and final season of Netflix’s popular Korean series Squid Game was released on June 27 and has quickly become a global hit. In just three days, the season was viewed over 60 million times, making it one of the biggest launches for a non-English show on Netflix.
The series ranked in the top 10 most-watched non-English shows on the platform, placing ninth with 60.1 million views between Friday and Sunday. It’s expected to surpass other hits like Lupin Season 2 soon, which had 68.4 million views. Netflix calculates views by dividing total watch time by the duration of the show to give a fair estimate of how many people watched it.
Although some viewers criticized the new season for being more violent than the previous ones, many still praised it for its gripping storyline and strong performances. Season 3 had a stronger start than Season 2, which reached 68 million views in four days, and it’s already ahead of past blockbusters like Wednesday, which had 50.1 million views in its first five days.
As the story continues, Gi-hun returns to the deadly game world, determined to stop it once and for all after discovering the truth about the game master.
Earlier, The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong Hyuk, has finally explained the real meaning behind the circle, triangle, and square symbols seen throughout the series. These shapes have been a central part of the show’s visual identity from the start.
Hwang shared these insights during a recent press event. He said the symbols were the first images that came to his mind when planning the series. He was inspired by the games he played in childhood. In those games, children would draw these simple shapes on the ground.
In Squid Game, the symbols appear in many important places. They are seen on the guards’ masks, on the Dalgona candy, and on the invitation cards given to the players. In season one, the shapes also formed the layout of the final game arena.
