Avocados are known for their health benefits and creamy texture, making them one of the most popular food items in any household. Although they are easy to eat and can be used in a variety of nutritious meals, many people still find proper storage a challenge.

Sometimes, just half an avocado is all we need, whether it's for a slice of toast or topping a salad, and letting that precious green goodness go to waste is simply not an option. Experts from EatingWell suggested that storing the avocado with one of the vegetables will help it stay fresh for a longer period of time.

The experts explained: "You can put your avocado half in an airtight container with a sliced onion and refrigerate it.

"The fumes from the onion slow down the browning process. Your avocado will stay green for at least two days, but it may absorb the onion flavour.

"That could be a benefit, depending on what you plan to make with it."

Avocados turn brown due to a natural process called oxidation. When the flesh is exposed to air, an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase reacts with oxygen and produces melanin, the same pigment responsible for human skin colour.

When an avocado is cut and exposed to air, a natural enzyme called polyphenol oxidase springs into action. This enzyme reacts with oxygen and the phenolic compounds present in the fruit-special plant chemicals that, once oxidised, form brown pigments.

As this process unfolds, the once-vibrant green flesh gradually darkens, impacting not just its appearance but also its texture and flavour. Browning often leads to a softer, mushier consistency and can introduce a slightly bitter taste.

Despite these changes, the avocado is generally still safe to eat unless there are signs of spoilage such as an unpleasant odour or visible mold.
