New Delhi, July 4: Raksha Nikhil Khadse, the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, graced the Grand Finals of the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS) 2025 held at Yashobhoomi, India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka. This event, running from July 4 to 6, features 16 elite BGMI professional teams competing for a prize pool of ₹4 crore, marking a significant moment for esports in India.
Khadse's presence at the tournament's inauguration highlights the Indian government's increasing acknowledgment of esports as a legitimate sporting discipline. Accompanied by Vibhor Kukreti, Head of Government Affairs & CSR at Krafton India, and other officials, she toured the venue and interacted with the esports athletes, observing the technical and logistical setups, including broadcasting arrangements.
During her visit, Khadse drew comparisons between esports and traditional sports, noting that both require discipline, mental strength, and teamwork. She stated, “Esports is motivating the youth of India to thrive in a fast-paced digital environment. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, the government is dedicated to developing world-class infrastructure and career opportunities, ensuring Indian talent shines globally.”
Esports received formal recognition from the Government of India in December 2022, when a Presidential Gazette Notification placed competitive gaming under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. In February 2025, the Ministry expanded its cash-incentive program, previously exclusive to Olympic and Commonwealth medalists, to include esports athletes and their coaches. Regulatory oversight is now a joint effort between the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aligning policies for both sports and digital governance.
This structured approach is vital as Indian esports athletes aim for prestigious international competitions, including the upcoming Olympic Esports Games 2027 in Saudi Arabia. Youth engagement in esports has surged in recent years, with millions of young Indians participating in various roles, reflecting the growing popularity of esports among the younger demographic.
The BMPS 2025 Grand Finals serve as a pivotal event for Indian esports, showcasing local talent and promoting industry collaboration. This tournament offers a vital platform for professional players to demonstrate their abilities, connect with an enthusiastic fanbase, and contribute to the dynamic landscape of competitive gaming in India.
