Puttur: Reacting to BJP leader Arun Kumar Puthila’s remarks in connection with a rape case involving a local youth, Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai on Saturday said he was deeply hurt by the comment made against him.

Rai, who had visited the survivor’s house on July 5, stated that his intention was to ensure justice for the woman, irrespective of political affiliations. “My concern was that the girl should not be wronged. I had suggested marriage between both parties as a way of ensuring justice and closure,” he explained.

Puthila had claimed that MLA Rai attempted to mediate and settle the issue through marriage. Addressing this, Rai clarified, “Both families had approached me. I made efforts to resolve the matter through mutual agreement, not out of any political interest. The accused had campaigned for Puthila during the elections, but I didn’t let that influence my thinking.”

Expressing disappointment over how the issue was being politicized, Rai said, “It is unfortunate that several political parties and organizations are attempting to exploit the situation for political gain. This is not the time for street debates. Everyone has a responsibility to help the two families come to an understanding and ensure justice is served.”

The accused has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway, Rai added.
