Response from Chief Election Commissioner on Voter List Issues

The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, has addressed the Congress party's allegations regarding discrepancies in Bihar's voter list. He stated that, as per the law, the voter list must be updated before every election. There has not been a thorough review of the voter list and details since January 1, 2003, which is a common practice. Almost every political party has raised concerns about the authenticity of the voter list and has called for updates. Over 100,000 booth-level officials, supported by all political parties, are currently working on this issue.

Congress's Strong Critique of Election Commission's Recent Directive

The Congress party has launched a fierce attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding its recent directive for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar within just one month. With elections approaching, senior Congress leaders have alleged that this move is a deliberate attempt to remove the names of the poor, Dalits, backward communities, and migrant workers. During a press conference held at the new Congress headquarters in Delhi, Congress media and publicity head Pawan Khera, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram, and Congress Bihar in-charge Krishna Allavaru questioned both the intent and feasibility of the revision process, labeling it as "humanly impossible."

Concerns Over Voter Verification Process

Pawan Khera raised a critical question about how it is possible to verify the names of 80 million voters in just 30 days. He noted that even the Chief Election Commissioner has acknowledged that this is a new ECI and a new norm. Khera questioned whether it is now up to the CEC to decide whom to meet or not. Tejashwi Yadav announced on Facebook that the opposition alliance, led by his party, will stage a blockade next week in protest against the special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar.

Opposition's Planned Protest Against Voter List Revision

After leading a delegation of the opposition alliance to the Election Commission office, Yadav went live on Facebook to express their objections against the special intensive revision, which he claims is a conspiracy to disenfranchise the weaker sections of society. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are fearful that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) may lose the upcoming assembly elections.
