New Delhi: Down to nine men in extra time, reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday. Desire Doue struck in the 78th minute to give PSG the lead before Ousmane Dembele scored in injury time to seal a 2-0 win for the French side in what was a dramatic finish to the game.
Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala suffered a horrific injury late in the first half of the quarter-final. Musiala appeared to have twisted his ankle after a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The young Bayern player appeared in significant pain after the horrific injury and was forced to leave the ground on a stretcher.
The injury appeared gruesome as Musiala’s boot got stuck below Donnarumma’s body when the PSG keeper was diving to save the ball from the Bayern midfielder. The injury took place right at the brink of halftime as players from both teams looked completely distraught when the 22-year-old was carried off the ground.
Talking about the game, the momentum swung between the two teams for more than 70 minutes, before Desire Doue scored in the 78th minute to give PSG the much-needed lead. PSG received two yellow cards within the next 15 minutes to be reduced to nine men. However, they held their nerves till the end to secure a thrilling 2-0 win.
Bayern found the back of the net twice after Doue scored the opener for PSG, however, both Dayot Upamecano and Harry Kane saw their goals being ruled out due to offside as the reigning European champions came out on top. PSG will now take on the winner of the clash between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
Doue broke the deadlock for PSG in the 78th minute after finishing a team move. The ball fell to the midfielder at the edge of the box, and he finished it emphatically into the bottom right corner to beat Manuel Neuer and put his team in front. PSG defender Pacho was sent off just five minutes after the opener for his foul on Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka.
PSG lost another player in the 92nd minute after defender Theo Hernandez was shown a straight red by the referee for his elbow into Raphael Guerreiro’s face minutes after coming on as a substitute for the French side. Hernandez’s red card saw PSG get reduced to nine men for the remaining eight minutes of the clash.
Bayern had the advantage in the dying minutes of the game against 9-man PSG, and the German side managed to create a lot of pressure. However, Louis Enrique’s men didn’t relent as they managed to retain their lead. In the 96th minute, Dembele capitalised on a brilliant pass from Achraf Hakimi to score the second for PSG and seal their victory in the quarter-final.
The referee awarded a penalty to Bayern in the 100th minute as the drama continued. However, VAR overturned the decision as the Germans were denied a chance to pull a goal back. PSG eventually came out comfortable winners at 2-0 and will look to continue their winning run in the semi-finals.
