Shubman Gill hit 161 runs from 162 balls on Thursday, July 5, as India declared their second innings at 427 for 6 from 83 overs. India's second innings aggregate, combined with their first innings score of 587, took them over the 1000-run mark in a Test match for the first time in their history.
Prior to this, there were only four other sides which had achieved 1000 or more runs in a Test match, and it had occurred five times overall. England still holds the record for most runs in a single Test match. They made 1121 runs in a Test match against West Indies in Kingston in 1930. England had scored 849 runs in the first innings of the match and then declared their second innings at 272 for 9.
India's previous record highest score in a Test match had been 916 runs, which they achieved against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2004.

Gill Smashes Records with Bat in Hand
Gill's outstanding performance on Saturday earned him many records. He scored a total of 430 runs in the second Test match against England, making him the highest run-scorer in a single Test match played abroad. He surpassed Mark Taylor's record of 426 runs set in 1998 in a Test match between Australia and Pakistan in Peshawar.
The only individual with more runs than Gill scored in a Test match is former England captain Graham Gooch. He scored 333 in the first innings and 123 in the second during the 1990 Test match against India at Lord's.
Gill is the first Indian and the fifth batter in the world to have made more than 400 runs in a Test match. The others are Graham Gooch, Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, and Brian Lara.

Leading from the Front as India's New Captain
Gill was made India's 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025. He captained from the front in both the second Test innings. He put up a great score of 269 runs off 387 balls in the first innings. His score of 161 in the second innings took his match score to 430.
He also became the world's second captain after Virat Kohli to achieve the feat of three centuries in two Tests.
