New Aadhaar Rules Announced, Check Updated Document List For Enrolment & Changes

New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has released a revised list of acceptable documents for making or updating an Aadhaar card. This step aims to make the process more simple, transparent, and secure.

Which Documents Are Accepted Now

According to UIDAI’s latest notification, the following documents are now valid for Aadhaar-related work:

  • Passport

  • Voter ID card

  • Driving License

  • Electricity, Water, or Gas Bills (as address proof)

  • Birth Certificate (in certain cases, it's mandatory)

These documents can be used for both identity and address verification.

Birth Certificate Now Mandatory for Some Children

For Indian and NRI children born on or after October 1, 2023, a birth certificate is now compulsory at the time of Aadhaar enrolment. Without this document, Aadhaar cannot be created for them.

Rules for Aadhaar Updates

If a person wants to change their name, date of birth, or gender on the Aadhaar card, they will need to provide valid documents such as:

  • Government Gazette notification

  • Medical certificate for gender reassignment (for transgender individuals)

  • School certificate

Only One Aadhaar Number Will Be Valid

If a person has received more than one Aadhaar number, only the first Aadhaar with biometric data will be valid. All other Aadhaar numbers will be cancelled.Even if the first Aadhaar doesn’t have biometrics, it will still be considered valid.

Special Rules for Foreign Citizens and OCI Holders

People like OCI cardholders, foreign nationals, and citizens of Nepal or Bhutan must follow a separate list of required documents provided by UIDAI.
