Chetan Anand's Cinematic Legacy

Chetan Anand, a prominent filmmaker, directed a total of sixteen films during his career, with five featuring the remarkable music of Madan Mohan.

A Selection of Chetan Anand's Most Memorable Songs

Kar chale hum fida jaan-o-tann saathiyon (Haqeeqat): This stirring anthem is a must-have on every patriot's playlist, featuring heartfelt lyrics by Kaifi Azmi and the powerful vocals of Mohd Rafi. Shabana Azmi, Kaifi's daughter, shares that she feels a rush of emotions every time she hears her father's words.

Do dil toote do dil hare (Heer Ranjha): Madan Mohan's compositions for Chetan Anand are nothing short of masterpieces, with Lata Mangeshkar's poignant rendition of lost love still evoking tears even after fifty years. During the recording, her performance of 'Heer' moved everyone, including the tough leading man Raj Kumar, to tears.

Aaj socha toh aansoon bhar aaye (Hanste Zakhm): This enchanting Ghazal, crafted by Kaifi Azmi and Madan Mohan, features Lataji's mesmerizing voice and the enchanting sound of Ustad Raees Khan's sitar, creating a timeless melody.

Hai tere saath meri wafa (Hindustan Ki Kasam): Lataji once remarked that if she had only sung this beautiful Ghazal, she would still consider herself fulfilled.

Mushkil hai jeena bedardon ki duniya mein (Sahib Bahadur): Although this lesser-known film featuring Dev Anand and Priya Rajvansh is not widely seen, the song showcases Lataji's extraordinary vocal range and emotional depth.

Tum jo mil gaye ho (Hanste Zakhm): Mohammed Rafi's unforgettable love ballad was initially intended as a solo, but after Priya Rajvansh heard it, Lataji was invited to join, enhancing its beauty.

Jayen toh jayen kahan (Taxi Driver): In this noir thriller, it was S. D. Burman, not Madan Mohan, who composed the music, allowing Dev Anand to deliver a haunting Ghazal in Talat Mahmood's voice.

Ayegi ayegi kissiko hamari yaad aayegi (Jaan-e-Man): Chetan Anand's remake of his own Taxi Driver features music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with Kishore Kumar's title track being a standout, alongside Lataji's heartrending song of longing.

Baharon mera jeevan bhi sawaron (Aakhri Khat): This classic number, composed by Khayyam and sung by Lataji, remains evergreen, alongside her lesser-known lullaby Mere chanda mere munne.

Humein tumse pyar kitna (Kudrat): By the time Chetan Anand directed this underrated film, Madan Mohan had passed away, leading him to collaborate with R. D. Burman, who delivered a stunning Ghazal performed by Kishore Kumar. Interestingly, a raga-based version by Parveen Sultana won a Filmfare Award, while Kishore's did not. Chetan Anand's final film, Haathon Ki Lakeerein, featured music from newcomer Pyare Mohan, but it lacked the melodic charm of his earlier works.
