James May candidly described Jeremy Clarkson as his "biggest nemesis" despite their long-standing on-screen partnership. The seasoned broadcaster, famed for his work on Top Gear and The Grand Tour with Clarkson, has surprisingly dubbed the 65 year old as much an adversary as a colleague.
When quizzed by the Observer newspaper on who he would consider his biggest nemesis, May didn't hesitate: "Honestly, it's probably Jeremy Clarkson." May recounted instances of being mistaken for his well-known co-star during his daily escapades, as he said: "I've been told I look like King Theoden from Lord of the Rings. Robert Plant is very flattering. Billy Connolly is flattering."
Yet, not all comparisons bring him joy, as he revealed the mix-ups that lead him to self-reflection: "Unfortunately, quite a few times when I've been out walking or riding my bike around London, I've been mistaken for Jeremy Clarkson. I have to go home, examine myself very deeply and think: what have I done?"
The pub-owning pair have a friendly rivalry, with James boasting that if ever caught in a zombie apocalypse, his Wiltshire local would be the sanctuary of choice.
James articulated his preference without hesitation, exalting his own pub's merits over Clarkson's: "Oh, mine. It's in Wiltshire. We're heavily armed down here."
Discussions wrapped up with May expressing irritation at how Clarkson dealt with the controversial end of their Top Gear tenure.
James May admitted to having mixed feelings about Jeremy Clarkson's infamous exit, which was sparked by a heated argument over a steak with a producer. On the Out To Lunch podcast, James stated: "I was conflicted, because it obviously wasn't right, that was a bad moment, but everybody's had one. They just tend to not be as public as his was."
He added: "I was slightly annoyed that it could have been resolved in a much cleaner and more straightforward way."
