The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning for increased rainfall activity over Maharashtra untill July 9. The weather department has placed Mumbai, Thane and Palghar under Yellow Alert for Heavy rainfall at a few places with ocassional strong winds. While the districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri are placed under Orange Alert for very heavy downpour.

"Under the influence of cyclonic circulation over Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood, Konkan region and the ghats region of Madhya Maharashtra are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 5 to 9. There is possibility of lightning and thunder accompanied by occasional gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph is very likely during the period," the statement issued by IMD Mumbai said.

On Sunday, an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall was issued for Thane, while a Red Alert was issued for Palghar. Mumbai witnessed moderate rainfall on Sunday, while it's metropolitan regions witnessed moderate to heavy showers. 

For the next 24 hours, Mumbai city and suburbs will have 'Generally cloudy sky with possibility of heavy rainfall at a few paces. Possibility of very heavy rainfall with occasional gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely at isolated places,' the local weather forecast says. The maximum and minimum temperatures will remain 31°C and 25°C respectively.

The rainfall activity has increased in Mumbai from mid-June and the city crossed average June rainfall this year. So far this season, the Colaba observatory has recorded 684 mm rainfall and Santacruz observatory has recorded 649 mm. On the same day last year since the onset of monsoon the rainfall recorded in the observatories was 558 mm and 443 mm, respectively. Mumbai has already received 26.81% of its seasonal rainfall.

Apart from the main city, the catchment areas have already witnessed heavy downpour. This has brought relief to Mumbaikars as the level of lakes supplying water to the city has reached almost 60%.

As of early morning of July 6, the water levels across seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai reached 59.56%, which on the same day in 2024 was mere 10.88% and in 2023 was 18.29%.
