Emergency: 25 June 1975 is known as a black chapter in Indian history. Fifty years ago, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency on this day. The fundamental rights of citizens were also abolished. The freedom of expression was taken away. The country’s democratic rights were crushed in one stroke. Then from the leaders raising their voice against the atrocities of Indira, from the leaders to social workers, they were put in jail. Let me tell you that at this time many heroes of Bihar played their role in the fight against the Emergency under the leadership of Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan. Among them, many student leaders, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, have many memories who will also make you stand up. A memoir is published in Udayakant Mishra’s book ‘Friends in Nitish Kumar’. In this book, CM Nitish has mentioned the next day’s environment of Emergency. He has mentioned the incident of 26 June 1975 in which many revelations have been made.
In the book ‘Nitish Kumar in the eyes of friends’, Nitish Kumar says that after July 1975, there was a flood in Bihar. We kept hiding from one village to another to avoid the police trap. The Khadi Village Industries Association was founded by JP on the banks of the Falgu River in Gaya. We were holding a big gathering there, in which I was giving a speech. Lalu ji and Jagdish Sharma ji were also with me, but somehow the police got the news and the police raided there. The student struggle committee participating in the meeting, Sarvodaya Sangharsh Vahini and 16-17 big leaders of opposition parties were arrested. We were trying to escape from 12-13 people including Lalu ji. There were many big bundles of wood next to the boundary wall, somehow climbed them to Munder of 10-11 feet high wall, but on the other side the sand was even deeper into the dry Falgu river.
In the book, Nitish Kumar says that CM Nitish further says, Mary and Lalu ji will be around 25 years old, but Bhavesh Chandra Prasad ji who is older than us, even Ram Sundar Das ji who is about 50 years old, had to run away from such a height. I did not like all this, but at that time our priority was to avoid arrest at any cost. We all ran away with many of our colleagues to escape as fast as they could to avoid the grip of the police. After running away for a long time, Lalu ji fell on the ground after being breathless.
In the book, Nitish Kumar says that Nitish Kumar further said, in this Bhagdaur, my coral -studded gold ring, which was made of grandmother’s earrings, fell into the river Falgu of Gaya Tirtha. After this we kept running in many places. But, the police intelligence system was so time that if we had stayed for a few hours, they would have got the news. However, despite hiding from police and people, I was arrested during the Emergency. During the Emergency, I stayed in jail for 9 months, leaving the last time of absconding.
