Real Madrid are reportedly 'holding out' for a deal that may indirectly boost Arsenal's chances of landing forward Rodrygo from Los Blancos. Mikel Arteta is keen to add another forward to his squad, in addition to Viktor Gyokeres.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with the Brazilian, who has been pushed further down the pecking order at the Bernabeu over the last six months. Madrid could benefit from the cash, having splurged on a series of signings this summer. Xabi Alonso has already been backed with nearly £100million in summer signings, and is set for more deals as the Spanish giants bid to reclaim La Liga next season.
According to Spanish publication Diario AS, Madrid are 'holding out' for £42m-rated Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras. That is despite having other options for the position, including a cheap deal for their former star, Miguel Guttierez.
Madrid would reportedly prefer to sign Carreras, but Benfica's asking price is a sticking point. The Portuguese side are demanding the former Manchester United star's full release clause.
Should Madrid press ahead with a deal, it could prove decisive in Arsenal's pursuit of another forward. Keen to recoup funds after the potential arrival of Carreras, Rodrygo is one of their most sellable assets, able to command a huge fee.
With three years still remaining on his contract, Rodrygo is reportedly valued at around £77m. That would see the Spanish capital club still come out at a profit if they do move for Carreras over the coming weeks.
Arsenal are widely reported to want a second forward, in addition to Gyokeres, would can upgrade their front line. Noni Madueke, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze have all been linked alongside Rodrygo.
But it is the latter who could present the easiest deal for Arsenal to complete. Madrid are unlikely to turn down a major approach for the 24-year-old, particularly if they sign Carreras.
Rodrygo has been an unused substitute in Madrid's last two Club World Cup matches. Young forward Gonzalo Garcia, 21, has made himself a useful option for Alonso at this summer's tournament, meaning there is further competition for Rodrygo. Alonso said: "I'm sure Rodrygo can return to his best form. I spoke with him - he's positive, eager, and ready when needed."
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal move for Rodrygo, but Madrid's pursuit of yet another big-money player may indicate that it is a potentially achievable deal.
