We all have heard movies being shot on ultra-expensive cameras but rarely it has came out that a whole movie has been picturised using a phone. Renowned director and film producer Danny Byole made this possible by utilising 20 phones to shoot an entire film. Known for redefining zombie cinema with film 28 Days Later Boyle collaborated with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle and employed three different iPhone rigs for his $75 million zombie sequel.
How 28 Years Later was shot using IPhone?
In 28 Years Later Boyle and Mantle captured key shots using iPhone 15 Pros. They used three different iPhone rigs one held eight phones another ten and the largest accommodated a full 20 iPhone Pro Max(es). These camera setups were mounted on crane or carried by crew members to shot the 180-degree views of the action.
Its quite graphic but its a wonderful shot that uses that technique in a startling way that kicks you into a new world Boyle revealed to IGN. He also revealed that the IPhone-camera setup gave unexpected benefits to him apart from capturing a visual spectacle.
It gives you 180 degrees of vision of an action and in the editing you can select any choice from it he explained. Despite using smartphones as the main device 28 Years Later didnt seem like being shot through phone. The iPhone cameras had professional cinema lenses being instilled in front and the production team received technical support from Apple. Shot in Apples ProRes codec the phones had maximum image data for post-production colour grading and editing. Boyle explained that todays smartphones are equivalent to high-profile cameras and would easily document a real zombie apocalypse in 2002.
