Guwahati, July 10: The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has reported a notable surge in its performance for the April to June quarter of 2025, achieving total tea sales of 32.21 million kg. This marks an increase from 25.37 million kg during the same timeframe last year, representing a 27% rise year-on-year.
CTC teas continued to dominate the market, with sales climbing from 16.17 million kg in 2024 to 20.46 million kg in 2025. However, the average price for this category saw a decrease of Rs 14.68 compared to the previous year’s quarter.
Sales of dust teas also improved, reaching 9.82 million kg, up from 8.25 million kg last year, with the average price rising to Rs 240.20 from Rs 225.30 in Q1 of 2024.
Orthodox teas experienced the most significant growth, doubling from 0.94 million kg in 2024 to 1.92 million kg this quarter. The average price for these teas increased notably to Rs 279.63, up by Rs 16.14 from the previous year. This growth was bolstered by increased participation from international export buyers, according to Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers’ Association.
Regarding pricing, 22% of CTC leaf and 30% of dust tea were sold for over Rs 300 per kg. Additionally, 38% of CTC leaf and 29% of dust were priced between Rs 200-299, while 40% of both categories fell within the Rs 100-199 range.
“The increasing share of teas fetching premium prices indicates robust demand and a sustained preference for quality products in the market. GTAC plays a crucial role in India’s tea trading landscape, facilitating producers, buyers, and traders through a transparent and efficient auction process. With favorable crop trends and ongoing buyer interest, GTAC anticipates handling higher tea volumes in the coming months. The Centre is well-equipped to enhance its position as a key tea trading hub both domestically and internationally,” Bihani stated.
